Steve, thanks for the kind words. It took me a while to work past the “steady job” mentality, and every now and then it pops back up again. I’m not going to go all political here, but this country doesn’t make it easy for people who go the route of self-employment; the structures we have were all designed to deal with a labor-employer social contract that’s long dead. The “bad” years have been the ones where I’ve been thrown into self-employment unprepared, without a clear picture of what to do. I went into this last job with a totally different view: I was serving a client, and if it didn’t pan out, then there would always be another if it didn’t work out.

A number of years ago, having been laid off from another company, I realized that we’re all contractors. When we’re working full-time for a company, we have one client. And if/when that company no longer needs our services, we’re back to square one.

In that respect, being a freelancer is the risk-averse thing to do. Takes a lot of moxie to see it that way, but it’s true. In the decade I’ve been on my own, I’ve had some years far better than others, but I’ve never had a truly bad year. Moreover, as you say, I’m in control of my destiny; I’ve walked from a client who was a pain in the neck….resigned an account because I didn’t feel I could help them like they needed…and had the pleasure of working with some of the finest men and women I’ve ever met in the business world. Many remain friends to this day.

So, good luck, Sean. You won’t need it. You’re already where you want to be…and that’s a good thing.

I enjoyed very much your post.
The first time I was thanked for my service was on July 1, 1997, when I relinquished command of Battery A, 2d Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, two months before I left the Marine Corps after 10 years, 3 months, and 13 days of service. My Battery First Sergeant shook my hand after the change of command ceremony and said those words. I didn’t know how to respond. I had never thought about it. I had never had to think about it, as it had never come up.
After 9/11/01, I also, as you relate, occasionally have been accosted/recognized with that phrase. I do not take pleasure in it. I find it trite and insincere in the majority of instances. I think the military is overpaid and pampered. Military appreciation days/sales/discounts make me smirk. Perhaps I am maladjusted.

Gaddangit, I just got one of these for the first time. When I figured out what it was (on the word “webcam”) and ended the convo, my account got booted offline and my whole Internet connection went *poof*. Now I can’t get back online with my Yahoo chat. Apparently, it’s being used from elsewhere now. >.<

Uh…perhaps when his characters are merely mirrors of himself, MT. If you want preening, bloated narcissim, Bill Shatner’s your man. He does that well.

There is one plus side to Boston Legal: Shatner’s not directing any more Star Trek movies.

But honestly, folks…William Shatner is a comedic actor. Boston Legal is a “dramedy”; the only reason that it was nominated as a drama was because of the realpolitik of the comedy category: despite how much it sucks, Everybody Loves Raymond was preordained to win.

Just knowing that their parents financed the purchase is enough to tip you off to the neighborly quality of the brothers. They didn’t have to skrimp and save to buy the house so they feel no real sense of ownership. And it’s apparent the father hasn’t instill good neighborly values into his boys either.

I don’t know what to tell you other than I feel for you. Living in close proximity to neighbors like that is a real b*tch when you understand the circumstances but others living so close to you don’t.

Couple of comments on the spud gun & misfires. Not sure where your igniter is located, but we’ve found over the years that having the igniter on the cap is the best way to keep it “dry” from the hairspray and fuel. What happens is the hairspray or fuel “wets” the ignitor and won’t fire. In regards to the brand of hairspray, we find that Aqua Net SuperHold is the best fuel. In terms of ammunition, we only use vegetables and it depends on the size of the pipe, but bakers and yams tend to be the best fuel.

as a BCPSS teacher, I find it odd that they need to import teachers when current teachers are denied transfers and discouraged from changing postions, unless of course they randomly reassign you. maybe they have to go over seas because no one from the area is stupid enough to work in the city any more.

interesting well research read that is easily harder hitting then the sun article. I find this particularly interesting because my wife is filipino, and her family moved to the states due to her mom being imported for nursing work in the 80′s and myself being an ex baltimore city school teacher. The idea seems good / short sited. The phillipines is a perfectly place to outsource to / import from because they have a highly education englisg proficient population to pull from, and an eagerness to move up and out. As far as culture, its not that much of a stretch asside from the old joke about pinoy time and such… but the short sitedness comes from not fixing the root problem… which is quality of life. When I was teaching in the city I never fealt like quiting because of the kids, I fealt like quiting because of the system and the realities of the system… uncontrolables and the such…

on a personal positive note… this will bring alot more filipinos to baltimore and me more excuse to con my wifes family into opening a filipino resturaunt…

also if your wife is becoming a teacher and still wanting to teach in the city, but fears the “system” maybe she should look into one of the charter schools opening in the fall like city neighbors or paterson park elementary… im involved in the later if she wants any info…
